Hi Shaun, Secularism as defined in the dictionary is 'a system of political or social philosophy that rejects all forms of religious faith and worship.' The social state secularist view point comes from this philosophy. And that is all secularism is - another worldview. You say 'Secularists don't say let this group's views dominate and suppress that groups, they say, they all have an equal voice, but no one dominates.' Ok this statement worried me. So no particular religion dominates - and the only way this can happen is if the worldview of secularism dominates. Think about it. You have two feuding religions who believe in opposing things with passion. Instead of society investigating each religions way and making a choice - they add a third worldview/religion into the equation (secularism) who comes along and under the guise of 'unity' and 'harmony' and 'the greater good' slaps each of the religions down into a minority corners and effectively says "tow the secularist line" and admit that secularism rules. Only people who are liberally "religious" will be able to do this. Anyone with any shred of conviction about God and truth will not bow the knee to this covert 'heavy handed' approach. The big assumption for secularism to work (which all religions must accept and bow the knee to!) is that secularism is the majority view or the mainstream default. In fact you could go as far to say it is the 'absolute' to which you must submit to. You have to therefore have faith and follow the religion of secularism base don its assumptions and premise. Secularism is based on a faith in an assumption that God does not exist for the majority. Therefore tolerance can only happen if the religious parties that have been slapped back into their corners - liberalise their views and agree to keep quiet. It doesn't work. As for your comments "Secularism is a position one takes to ensure ALL sectors of society, regardless of their faith or lack of it, get equal treatment. " This is absolute rubbish. Try telling that to the government who - in a politicians recent statement said "We don't do God". Or the BBC's heavy secularist philosophy that governs what is broadcast and what is not. Secularism will slowly, slowly, little by little push religion into smaller and smaller minorities and isolation. It will eventually push people with real conviction under ground. A true Muslim who believes in state domination and rule and killing of the infidels (all of which are spoken of in the Qu'ran) will not settle for secularism. A true Christian who will not deny God's existence and will not bow the knee in worship to any government who will not recognise or allow a belief in Jesus as Lord and Saviour - will not settle for secularism. Secularism to bring about tolerance and a peaceful society will not work. Eventually it will lead to problems. And the only idea secularists will come up with a that point is to do away with religion totally. |
