SO: Its wrong that UK taxpayers (whether Atheist, Christian, Catholic or other) have to pay for Popes visit. I agree. The Catholic church (Universal and Worldwide) is minted and should have plenty of money for this trip. I agree. Catholics in this country should be allowed to be thrilled that he is visiting. And it is big news (historically and contemporary) and worthy of coverage. I agree. BBC should be allowed to cover His visit well. (They shouldn't be bribed or paid or pressured to do so - however it is newsworthy.) I agree. Why should the BBC coverage not be on the main channel? Why should it have to secondary - or of lesser importance? News should be based on it s newsworthiness - and this is a big visit that is applicable to 1000's of Catholics in the UK. The only reason some might say that this should be on a less 'main stream' channel is that their beliefs and assumptions and worldviews govern their opinion. FOr example 'sceularism is the only truth and the mainstream absolute - therefore that is what should govern the main broadcasting channnels. All lesser worldviews and faiths should be sidelined and only broadcasted on less main stream channels.' This is a very wrong view. Secularism is a standpoint of faith just as much as Catholicism and other religions. Let the Popes visit be what it is - big news for Catholics! Let the visit be funded willingly by Catholics alone. Let news channels broadcast it as they as they see fit. Whats the problem in that? |
