He's right, Vanessa. Baroness Warsi IS "a nutter and a Tory" - but then those two words generally go hand-in-hand. It was good to see Anita Anand take her apart on yesterday's "Daily Politics" programme. In her comments, Warsi claimed that religious people are more likely to give to charity and do other good deeds. Her remarks were made to imply that people of "faith" are somehow better and more moral than the rest of us. People of no faith have the right to contest that notion: the pope who is currently gracing us with his presence lifted the excommunication of Bishop Richard Williamson, a Nazi sympathiser. He has also done as little as possible to bring to book those Catholic priests who have indulged in child sexual abuse. Those of us who are atheists do not need any lessons in "morality" from him or any other religious figure. |
