| Smoking ban comes in and pubs close, but is it proven that one is the exclusive cause of the other, rather than the economic climate. Village pubs in the UK have been closing in the UK for years alongside post offices and local shops. I suspect that if mortgage rates carry on rising and food increases in cost as well as petrol, that the pubs will struggle even more to make money, especially since beer is now three quid a pint and rising rapidly. I am not convinced that the smoking ban has made a great difference as the proportion of customers nipping outside for a ciggie is still quite high, its the total number of customers that has fallen, rather than just smokers. |
