| I didn't see the Panorama programme last night, but I did see the ITV programme on the same subject at 7.30. This was of particular interest to me as it was set in the main shopping street of the town of Barrow, where I was born and grew up. I have many memories of a bustling street, Dalton Road, full of shops, pubs and cafés where all the generations spent much of their leisure time. Walking down Dalton Road is a sad experience today, and the rows of empty, crumbling shop fronts have much more to do with the disappearance of Vickers Armstrongs, the town's main employers in my day, and the rise of online shopping, than with a lack of parking facilities. Yes, easy parking can help, but the main reasons for CHR's gap-toothed faҫades lie elsewhere, I fear. |
