This comes back to the original problem. 20 years ago I would have bought books in Waterstones, but I don't want to pay 20% more for them. Business rates for a shop the size of Waterstones in Chiswick are probably thousands per week. With those expenses, they can't compete with the likes of Amazon who will have an out of town warehouse. The government has to cut business rates if we want high streets to survive. |
