Agreed Al. Some good places have suffered from the internet and business rates and so have lots of crap places. I don't grieve over the loss of BHS or Littlewoods (where I once had a Saturday job flogging their terrible clothes). They have left gaps on the High Streets. Some of the stores are just massive and will never be single retail outlets again even with solutions to business rates and tax on the internet giants. I found the argument that High Streets need to provide more leisure, health and entertainment facilities compelling. Thre isn't much for families to do apart from eating on Chiswick High Road. I've missed having a cinema nearby for the two decades I've lived here. More leisure facilities would help to bring more people to the High Road. Bowling, golf (Swingers), table-tennis (Bounce), darts (Flight Club), climbing places with bars and restaurants for example. As for how people get here: well in a couple of years there will be one more way to get here than there is now so that's good and is really just a moot point now. |
