| The impression I get is that logic and reason play little part in leavers’ commitment to Brexit. Instead they are driven by emotions. One of the few leavers among my circle admitted he voted with his ‘heart’ not his head. These emotions can be a nostalgia for an imagined better past, or a generalized mistrust of foreigners, or a fury about their being ‘left behind’ for which they wrongly blame th E.U. rather than the true culprit, our own governments. Or they have a loathing of people like us who they see as whinging liberal elitists. And some, of course, are just racists. Yes, it’s a desperate and dangerous situation. |
