Security. In wider foreign intelligence terms probably not too much, the UK is a member of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance together with Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the and the United States. That won't change, and means our global intelligence activities are unlikely to be too severely impacted. However Europe is likely to be a different story, we are currently members of the European Arrest Warrant scheme, the European passenger name records database and the Prum agreement, which allows countries to share DNA, fingerprint and vehicle registration data. At the moment it is unclear whether we will remain part of these and leaving these would impact our ability to identify and track persons of interest across Europe, also to have them extradited to the UK quickly and efficiently. Further at stake is our membership of the crucial database known as Schengen Information System II (SIS2), which provided more than 10,000 alerts to British police and enforcement agencies about sex offenders and other criminal suspects during 2018. It can be assumed that in the case of a deal passing through parliament, some access to or associate membership of the above will be maintained. In a no deal scenario all bets are off. |
