To quote from the MP's code of conduct, under Section III Duties, para 6... "Members have a duty to act in the interests of the nation as a whole; and a special duty to their constituents" Therefore, MPs who feel that Brexit would be injurious to the nation as a whole are constrained to act against Brexit, if they are to comply with their duty. Nation as a whole outranks constituents. Note that nowhere under 'Duties' are MPs obliged to act in the interests of their party. Further, it is to be expected that the Leave hierarchy will seek to shift blame onto Remain for its own failures. It was Leave that promised undeliverable outcomes, it is Leave that has been in control of the process and it is Leave that is failing to deliver on its undertakings. Further still, it's unlikely that anybody voted Leave expecting to become poorer as a result, yet that is the most likely outcome. |
