| Posts reminding or informing people of the real consequences of Brexit do have a purpose. The warnings about the consequences of Brexit were labelled "Project Fear" before the Referendum, and because the UK economy did not drop off a cliff edge on the Referendum result (nobody said it would), the Brexiteers said "See, I told you so". But as doomsday approaches, the consequences of what people warned about are now becoming real. And on the other side, people are becoming aware that there are no benefits from Brexit, and a they were told things that are simply just not true (and continue to be told such things). So we have the die-hards (on both sides) who will never change their minds. However, I am sure there are many people who read these posts who don't themselves participate. I am also sure that many of those people (including those who voted for Brexit) are open minded and willing to consider the facts when they are presented. Even a couple of the Brexit die hards on this forum have indicated in the last week that they are having second thoughts. It now looks more likely that not that there will be a second referendum. The polls now consistently show that "Remain" is about 12% ahead of "Leave" (excluding "Don't Knows" i.e. about 48% "Remain", 38% "Leave", 14% "Don't Know", meaning that the split in favour of "Remain" (excluding "Don't Knows") is about 56% / 44% (far more decisive than the first referendum). In the first vote, if only 634,751 more people had voted "Remain" instead of "Leave", the vote would have gone the other way. This is in reality a tiny number. 16.5m did not vote at all. Some these were students, away at college taking exams so not able to vote, and likely to have voted "Remain". As another post said - time to change the conversation. Insulting people, either way, is more likely to get them to entrench their views. But giving people solid, factual, objective information may help people to see through the Brexit "myths". The likes of Claire Moran and Richard Greenhough may never change their minds (Claire Moran goes so far to say that she doesn't read the posts that don't support her prejudices). That doesn't matter. There are enough people who are open minded enough to look at the facts, and see what is going on around them. There are about 28,000 voters in W4. If only about 542 switched from "Leave" to "Remain", and this was replicated across the country, then the next Referendum will result in a "Remain" vote. This is why the Brexiteers are fighting tooth and nail to prevent a second referendum. They know which way the wind is blowing (now with a gale force). They know that their "will of the people" or "instructions from the British public" arguments are not only false, but dead in the water. |
