If you're right Steve then I don't see how it will possibly raise £1.2bn. There are just not enough £5m+ houses of the 100k or so in scope to make the numbers work. I believe it will operate more like the ATED tax which is set at a flat rate in bands i.e. you pay the same whatever the value in the £2-5m band. Currently for ATED that's £15,400 whether the house is worth - £2.1m or £4.9m. Nobody in the Labour party seems to be able to say how this will work in practice - I even dropped a line to our prospective Labour candidate over the weekend - answer came there none. If you've seen something concrete then I'd be interested in the link to it. But I think the reality is the actual numbers are just too awful to release to the public without there being a huge and immediate backlash .... |
