I take part in a daily YouGov survey where they ask you three questions on a matter of current interest. The other day it was on “mansion tax”. The first question was: Do you agree with a tax where people with homes worth over £2m pay a proportion of the value of their home? Result circa 80% in favour The second question was: Do you agree with a tax where people with homes worth over £500k pay a proportion of the value of their home? Result circa 50% in favour It just struck me that the popularity of the concept is directly proportional to the distance you are from the threshold. It is not a sensible way of gathering much revenue for the treasury but it is a good way of getting votes off the great majority who are susceptible to the politics of envy. |
