Not sure whether you were being ironic or not but it is surprising to see estate agents coming out against the mansion tax as it would represent a bonanza for them. Longer term residents on lower incomes would be forced to sell their houses and a good proportion of these would then be divided up into flats which are bought and sold much more often than houses. Commissions for agents would increase significantly. As I possibly count as an older person in your view can I just explain why we are all so desperately trying to accumulate capital. Not all of us are lucky enough to have a generous pension and face a substantial amount of time in which we won't be earning. Also the spectre of huge bills looms if we end up needing residential health care. Older people might have more capital than younger people but that doesn't necessarily represent social inequality. |
