I agree that pensioners benefits should not be ringfenced. As to the NHS, it's become a Tory mantra that the spending is 'unsustainable'. The UK still spends a great deal less per head on healthcare than practically any other developed country and less than half what they spend in the US where some of the population has no proper access to healthcare. Whether it's sustainable is a political choice and I believe the overwhelming majority of people would have it sustained. Equally, in the US they seem to manage to administer property tax which is levied, I believe in every state at a rate normally between 0.5 and 1.75%. Londoners with expensive houses should be glad they don't live in New Jersey where a £2M houseowner would be paying £37800 in property tax each year. This is a touch more than council tax plus mansion tax! |
