I'm not particularly concerned about its fairness, although I do have a large degree of sympathy for the "cash poor asset rich" case, which is made all the more invidious by Labour generously allowing those who can't pay it to fund it out of their estate, which, if the house is valued at 2 mill+ will already be subject to a significant amount of IHT. The point I am trying to make is that the amount it is likely to raise is relatively infinitesimal and it amounts to nothing more than dog whistle politics. We had Miliband up there effectively saying "blah blah blah, squeezed middle, cost of living crisis, fat cats, bankers, hedge funds, old Etonians boooo" and I am sure this week we'll have Cameron "benefit cheats, immigrants, booo, long term economic plan, blah blah blah". Given that three different members of Labours shadow cabinet had three different ideas of how this mansion tax would be implemented, it would suggest to me that this was designed as a bit of conference rabble rousing, and that they hadn't really thought it through much, if at all. |
