A story that in this week's newsletter which was relegated to the 'News from Nearby' section deserved a lot more prominence in my view is the one on TfL's plans for a new cycle lane in Shepherd's Bush This was the first I'd heard of the scheme and there seems to have been little fanfare about it which isn't unusual for TfL. However it is going to have a huge impact which will be felt directly in Chiswick not just by those who need to travel through the area. On the face of it it doesn't seem to have the kind of negative impacts which have made CS9 so controversial. The management of traffic around Shepherd's Bush Green and the Holland Park Roundabout is so bad that any negative impact of loss of road space to cycle lanes could probably be made up by better design. There are a couple of issues that do raise some concern. Firstly, as far as I can see absolutely no attempt has been made to link the plan with CS9 which runs parallel a few hundred yards away. Secondly, although the journey time impacts provided by TfL seem relatively benign i.e. bus and car journeys are not expected to be much longer, there are some contradictions in the claims made by TfL. They say that their modelling assumes drivers will choose other routes when the changes are made. But if journey times are not increasing why would they choose other routes. It looks like TfL are making the assumption that traffic will get worse initially and then improve when people give up — seems like wishful thinking. The biggest delays look like being on the Uxbridge Road going east which probably will mean traffic tending to use the Goldhawk Road more which is going to make things less pleasant for Stamford Brook. |
