| Traffic evaporation is well-established, we've seen exactly how it works: http://h2020-trace.eu/news/news-detail/braess-paradox-traffic-evaporation-does-closing-roads-increase-congestion/ It's exactly what's happened at Hammersmith Bridge, the increase in local congestion being less than the displaced motor traffic. Same as last time: "Dr Sally Cairns, a research fellow at the unit, said: "There have been significant traffic reductions in the immediate local area." "Thirty thousand vehicles used to use Hammersmith bridge but they have not been found on the two neighbouring bridges and there are surveys which show that as much as a third of car trips which used to be made are now made by other methods [of transport]."" http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/64516.stm London is choked with pointless, unnecessary car trips, 40% of which are less than 2 miles. That's a 2 ton vehicle carrying one person less than 2 miles. Insane. |
