| 'The only way to fix air pollution is to reduce the number of car journeys.' In London buses, HGVs, black cabs and LGVs account for most pollution, the overwhelming proportion if you are considering air borne pollution for particulates. So I think you probably meant to say 'motor vehicle' rather than 'car'. Even then your statement is questionable - it isn't the number of car journeys that matter but the number of motor vehicles on the road at any given time. If you increase journey times you need to reduce the number of vehicles enough to ensure that pollution doesn't rise. The reality is that it is very difficult to make categoric statements about what the impact of schemes like this will be. TfL's own data seems to suggest that there won't be much increase in journey times as a direct result of the scheme but as the original poster points out they are making the assumption that drivers will use alternate routes so the number of vehicles isn't going to reduce. This raises the possibility that the scheme will not reduce pollution, just spread it to roads on which more people live. On driverless cars, I thought that ultimately network management would significantly increase the capacity of inner city roads because they would use the space more efficiently. The bulk of these cars are likely to be Uber or some Uber successors so surge pricing would apply which could be used to manage demand. |
