| I'm surprised the dogma of traffic evaporation has re-emerged as it is self-evidently nonsense. It was originally put forward as a justification for the West London Tram. This would have closed the Uxbridge Road to traffic at various points diverting it through more residential roads in the area. The argument was seriously made that because these roads had a lower capacity the jams would be so bad that eventually drivers would give up and the traffic would be reduced. The flaw in this line of reasoning doesn't need to be explained and thankfully the West London Tram was binned. The wacky idea that closing Hammersmith Bridge might be a good thing would be quickly disabused by visiting the Barnes and Putney areas. People in Chiswick are complaining about increased jams around Hartington Road but these are trivial compared to those south of the river where the impact on people's quality of life in highly negative. Some drivers may have decided not to drive but most journeys are non discretionary including those by bus and delivery van - the latter are now being directed by traffic apps through residential roads in the area and causing chaos. |
