The tide is already turning. At the moment about a third of Heathrow's passengers are in transit, that will change here just as it has in the US. Airlines there are dropping the hub and spoke principle and going for point to point operations. At one time to travel from San Diego to Boston, you would take a small aircraft to Los Angeles then a big one to New York then a small one up to Boston, now you can use a low cost carrier and go non-stop, I beleive the same will happen here. I dont seee the attraction in 2030 of travelling overnight from the States to Heathrow then connecting on to Stockholm or Berlin or Glasgow, by then I am sure there will be non-stop services as they are cheaper to operate and use less fuel. Heathrow is as big as it needs to be to serve the Greater London area, what it DOES need is moving walkways that move, toilets that are clean, and seats to sit on as opposed to another shopping opportunity, and gates that are less than a ten minute walk from the main terminal, and whilst we are at it, a baggage system that can get bags into the arrivals hall in less time than it took to fly here. |
