Anyone who has traveled much will realise that this whole proposal is one big joke. Other major international airports that attempt to carry similar numbers of passengers (Paris, Amsterdam, Denver, Chicago) have 5 or 6 runways, not 3! Heathrow is undoubtedly the worst airport experience in the world. This is because it is hopelessly overstretched. The terminals are too cramped and small, the parking is inadequate, the access roads are pathetic, the queues for security humiliating. There just isn't enough space to fit everything in. If the expansion plans were to provide improved facilities without increasing flights and/or passenger numbers then there might be some hope of the Heathrow experience getting closer to that of other, better planned and better-managed airports. However, they plan to double the flights and passengers. This won't solve the problem - it will just make the mess twice as big as it is now. By the time that it is built we will all realise that yet further expansion is needed to make it tolerable - the problem is that there is nowhere else to go (unless they convert the M3, M25 and M4 into runways too). |
