"Hurrah for democracy." Democracy? You seem to have caste more than half the votes in this thread so far. Vote early and often, as they used to say in Northern Ireland! It's all very well saying that planes are getting quieter and less polluting, but people expect that moderm technology will give them a better quality of life, not one which is worse, but not as bad as it might have been. People living near to Chiswick High Road will suffer more noise than at present, and the government's latest proposals are for a longer runway which will take all but the largest 4-engine planes. So expect long-haul 777s and A330s as well as the smaller planes on European flights. Heathrow is a big employer and a big generator of business in West London, but it's not the only one. There is no reason why the expansion of the West London economy has to be at the cost of noise and pollution from enlarging Heathrow. The government consulted on the airports policy for the south-east, decided to put expansion of Stansted ahead of Heathrow, but has now changed their policy for no good reason. |
