The prevaling winds are indeed westerly but somedays they are easterly and other days calm or less than 5 knots. This is the key to westerly or easterly preferrence. An aircraft can usually take off with a full load with up to about 5 knots of tailwind, so even if the wind is from the east at say 3 knots the airport could still be using the western runways for take off and landing. |
