Assuming, of course, that our houses retain their value once Chiswick becomes a noisy hell hole. In addition to the points already made, what I think the Nimby argument misses is any sense of proportionality. We are not talking about a new primary school down the road, but a doubling of flights and the conversion of a place which is currently relatively free of plane noise into a flighpath - along with vast swathes of West London. The proposals are set to affect 2m people. I think the Nimby line is simply not relevant in relation to an impact on this scale. To this end most London MPs are against Heathrow expansion. What use is greater prosperity of none of us can sleep! |
