Tom Why will the noise environment in Grove Park improve with teh ending of mixed mode? The govnt/ BAA plans assume/ hope that planes will get quieter. However, there are no plans from either Airbus or Boeing to build planes that are dramatically quiter than those flying today. True some of the noisier older plans wil go, but the govnt's own recent noise study (which it rubbished because it didnt like the findings) showed that increased in flight frequencies far outway the benefit of older plans going. I can only say that the end of mixed mode will also be the end of my stay in Chiswick, and I know many others who feel the same. I have yet to see any of the 3rd runway proponents tell me why it is needed. Noone is proposing closing LHR, despite some classic straw man arguments from one or two people. So businesses that want to be near the airport will be happy. However, all economic studies have shown that transport links have to be of a sufficient level to foster economic growth, but no more than that. The point remains that business travellers are in a minority at LHR, and most of the growth in demand is from transit passengers who are of no benefit to the UK economy. Sucking in passengers from the regions will also overload the already creaking motorway network in the region, with negative implications for businesses. I would also point out that in our economy thinks like land and capital are in scarce supply, and the 3rd runway will use these resources for limited return. I also wouldnt get too carried away with the idea of seeing delays reduce. In any scenario the runway will not be ready until 2020, while passenger numbers will increase to absorb any slack. |
