"International companies are international, and locate near to international facilities. In my own industry I notice that Fujitsu, SAP, Microsoft, Oracle, Hewlett Packard, Dell, EDS etc etc are not based in Chelmsford, nor are Smithkline Beacham and many others." But aren't these companies really based here because of the availability of local skills, not Intl travel? Thames Valley Park in Reading (home to Microsoft, Fujitsu etc) is certainly thriving to the availability of local IT skills. GlaxoSmithKline is in Brenford due to the fact they could develop headquarters on their existing landbank at a low cost. Having a good airport nearby certainly helps these companies, but Intl travel is just one of many factors - as evidenced by the many Intl companies that don't have their UK HQ's in West London e.g. those in the Midlands, Milton Keynes etc etc. |
