"Well I suppose that would make Heathrow the worlds biggest international airport rather than a domestic hub!" Surely this is the nub of the problem. Many of the additional passengers will not actually leave the airport. Their flights will increase noise and pollution and undoubtedly the services provided to the airlines will increase employment (though in the lower skilled roles increasingly filled by economic migrants - not Londoners). The big problem is that all this activity actually has very little benefit for local residents or the UK economy as a whole given that many of the fares from tickets will be recognised as revenues at the point of origin / destinations so the UK as a whole will not see a significant increase in tax receipts / corporation tax. |
