| I see it's coming up on 2 years since I started this thread - which tells its own story. Things do seem to follow a predictable pattern, broadly linked to economic cycles. There is a downturn, buildings are vacated and stand empty, often for decades. At some point the economy improves and there's a stampede to redevelop sites, whether for business or, as in this case, housing. Inevitably those late to the party pile in, the market becomes saturated, and grandiose plans are shelved leaving behing empty sites or unlet accomodation as the whole thing starts again. Just look around the area - massive plans for yet more flats have stalled and the market is in danger of imploding. We just never learn. What will now become of the Glaxo site, or the Empire redevelopment, or the B&Q land, or vacant sites left over after the closure of Homebase stores, letalone a barely viable pub? Don't hold your breath. |
