Tom, Anyone can pick and choose a month or two to prove a point. You chose April and May. It is now one day before November and the number of shoppers on TGT and Devonshire Road is much reduced - an escalating problem as more and more people have been driven to drive outside Chiswick to shops where there is parking or to shop online. It's also possible to choose a type of shop or two to prove a point. Selecting Covent Garden Fishmonger and Lemon & Limes doesn't prove anything about other shops or, indeed, how those food retailers are doing now. One interesting point is that sales of foodstuffs don't increase or decrease in a crisis; we continue to need to eat and generally eat more or less similarly. It is about market share. If those two shops experienced an increase in sales/revenue, there will have been a decline somewhere else. (Accepting that, during lockdown, some of us - ahem - put on weight as we did eat more but the generality is that it is about market share.) What about other shops, though? Perhaps dropping in on some of them might elicit some facts you haven't unearthed yet. My very recent conversations with many on TGT and Devonshire Road have been depressing. On the data point, I will share that when the time is right. All I will say now is that it is factual, comparative and compelling. And I expect you will find much to criticise. |
