I did ask a couple of the shops I frequented at the time how trade was going and they said they had a large growth in home deliveries to supply the large number who were household isolating. If you were on TGT in May you would've seen an almost constant loading of delivery vans from some of the food shops. Certainly their delivery slots were backed up for several days at times as the large on-line grocers also struggled themselves to cope. You would also have noticed very little shopping by car at that time. Government advice was in fact to minimise car journeys and most of us were respecting that, with some notable exceptions! I've no idea how the removal of the parking spaces in early May could be disentangled from these shifts for the minority of shops that were then open, but that's exactly what Councillor Biddolph is claiming. |
