It cannot be a coincidence that the proposal for this skyscraper and the extension of the Great West Corridor were made at almost the same moment just before Christmas. It seems to be standard operating practice for developers and Councils to time potentially controversial consultations for holiday periods. This probably works well in other parts of London but we are fortunate enough to have an effective local media here which probably makes crude attempts to bury bad news counterproductive. Given that the Golden Mile plan was announced during Christmas it is a fair assumption there is something in it which would undermine attempts to resist an accelerated development of the area. I've looked through the materials issued by the Council about the plan and they are not really specific enough to identify what key changes are taking place. It is at this point that local amenity groups and residents' associations really need to come into their own. They are probably the only ones qualified to look at what is happening from a perspective other than a nakedly pro-development one and explain exactly how people can retain some control over the future of their area. |
