| The charity shops don't have the staff to sort clean and mend things (although they sometimes will with something they think will be a good sale for them). Some of the charity shops have a two tier system so that they sell some things in their smarter shops and other things in their other shops. There are a lot of people who could do with someone to mend things for them. There are a lot of elderly (and I bet some of them are in affluent Chiswick) who are no longer able to do their own alterations as they lose/put on weight and their fingers no longer work as well as they did and their eyesight isn't good enough to thread a needle and who no longer have the mobility to go out and visit the dressmaker/dry cleaners etc. They are also not computer literate. They will be lucky to have a carer who will do something like this. Their children (if they have them) live too far away or are too busy or they don't want to bother them. The homeless shelter for people would be able to use towels and bedding and so would the dogs and cats charities. Carers will occasionally mention that they look after people who have very few possessions and could do with more of one thing or another. There is sometimes a passing around between those being cared for this reason and because they have been dumped on the state by their families. |
