Carrie, there was quite a clear distinction between the generality of the students in the protest and the ones around the van. The point I was trying to make was that the group that thrashed the van were quite clearly not students. They looked thuggish and feral and had dressed in deliberately non-descript clothing as the criminal classes general do in an age of ubiquitous CCTV. The students who were overwhelmingly middle class judging from every one I saw and every interview they gave on TV. I was a student once and everyone of my contemporaries was or became middle class if you take career and income as a guide and I don't think this generation is likely to be any different. As I said previously their grievances aren't likely to ignite a overwhelming show of support from the unions or the broader population who have far more serious concerns. |
