| If councillors vote against the whip - then they could find themselves outside of the group and facing disciplinary action. It is as simple as that, so they are not 'free to vote for who they like at a council meeting', if the Labour Group has nominated a candidate - even if that was rammed though against some people's better judgement - the councillors will be told to toe the party line. |
