| The process normally would be - that the majority group would seek candidates for Mayor from among their number, if there is more than one candidate then a secret ballot takes place, the person with the lowest number of votes drops out and so on, until there is a winner. The person with most votes would then have their name presented to a meeting of the full Borough Council, it is up to minority parties if they wish to nominate one of their number for the position, if that happens a vote would be called. Members would then make their decision, by voting, if there is only one candidate the agreement of the members present would be sought, the point being that the Leader cannot just appoint his favoured candidate and present councillors with a fait accompli. |
