| 'What is surprising is how, what from the outside appears to be a relatively inconsequential appointment, has generated such an almighty row within the Labour party.' Because ever since anyone can remember the Mayor is elected from among the majority group on the council NOT appointed. It would appear that the Leader has thought that using his power to ride roughshod over all the councillors would come in handy as a sweetener to keep people 'onside' to shore up his position. Or, possibly a little bauble to dangle to others in future. Also, it does rather overlook the fact that other people may well have thought they would like a crack at the Mayoralty and thus were prevented from even putting their names forward. As well as stopping their colleagues from having a choice or indeed any input. That ain't democratic. |
