| Why will it be a rubber stamp exercise? Councillors are free to vote for who they like at a council meeting and there is no such thing as a three line whip in local government. The reality is that the leader gets to pick because he also gets to hand out extra committee positions and offices which come with additional allowances. Let's not pretend democracy has been traduced here - councillors are going to do what they are told for fear of loss of income and the ones that are complaining are the minority that are not in receipt of any special allowances. This type of carry on is not unusual and certainly not unique to Hounslow. The problem for Cllr Rajawat is that he has an unusually large number of councillors who have no prospect of getting any sort of role and therefore they feel free to complain in public about his leadership. If there were 22 who felt they could challenge him on this issue, they could get together with the Tories and elect their own candidate. There clearly aren't enough of them. |
