| A full council meeting is taking place on 23 May and according to the agenda a vote will he held to elect the Mayor with multiple nominations allowed. It seems to me that there is nothing to stop anyone putting forward a rival candidate to the leader's preferred appointee. Clearly there are factional issues at play here and the prospective next Mayor appears to be in a grouping which includes Samia Chaudhary who represents Hounslow Heath alongside Afzaal Kiani. Shantanu Rajawat as leader is perfectly entitled to pick a Mayor and ask his colleagues to support his decision. In turn, there is no good reason why councillors should vote for their own candidate. I don't see how democracy is in anyway being compromised here. What is surprising is how, what from the outside appears to be a relatively inconsequential appointment, has generated such an almighty row within the Labour party. |
