Henry, The latest IPCC report* is much more unequivocal than you indicate. It states: "There is very high confidence that the net effect of human activities since 1750 has been one of warming." In this context "very high confidence" means a better than 90% chance, and is the highest level of confidence of that the IPCC use to describe their judgements. Those who still believe that natural variations are behind the current warming trend are obstinately ignoring the overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary. As for the effects and the response, the IPCC states it is "virtually certain" that there will be decreased crop yields in warmer regions, while cooler areas will see increased agricultural productivity. There are going to be some deeply moral decisions that will have to be at an international level to cope with these changes - Monbiot is quite right in drawing attention to the difficult choices we will face. *http://www.ipcc.ch/pdf/assessment-report/ar4/syr/ar4_syr_spm.pdf |
