It is flattering to have ones words quoted by such a luminary as Malcolm. Peter Thompson has said it all really, but I would just like to emphasis the work we are doing comes out of earlier and more general consultation. Peter highlights "Address the £12.4M of backlog maintenance identified through the building condition surveys which we undertook in August 2007. This is the legacy of years of underfunding by the previous administration." We were told to do this over and over again on doorsteps, and in every attitude survey. It is our manifesto commitment to increase participation in leisure and cultural services. Improving the library service part of that. "Spend more on our libraries, pools, parks and community halls," is what we heard over and over again in opposition. We are responding to that. One or two contributors to this thread seem keen to prevent us. Why would that be? It is, I suppose, understandable that residents might be nervous after the disaster-strewn track record of the last Labour administration's leisure and cultural policies. We will consult, of couse we will, but should we consult before we have a plan to consult about? The irony of consultation is that the same plan gets equally criticised for being too vague and for having all the decisions already taken. I look forward to seeing the responses when the plan is unveiled. |
