"On the face of it, putting a company known for its building and property development in charge of parks and the library at least requires discussion before the deed is done." Peter Thompson's post described three groups of services. Parks and libraries were in different groups, so I'm not sure if you are really assuming that Laing are the preferred bidder for both groups. In any case, Laing are now a very different company from the out-of-date view that you have of them as a building and property development company. They have sold off a number of the construction businesses in recent years, such as Laing O'Rourke. But even if your view of Laing was accurate, are you seriously suggesting that the choice of a contractor is a matter on which residents should be directly consulted? Of course deals are being done behind closed doors. You can't carry out complex commercial negotiations any other way. Personally, I don't feel the need to be consulted at this stage. For all your nostalgia for the previous consultation, it seemed to me that it actively impeded the provision of a 21st century library facility in Chiswick. |
