| Food waste in the home is also supposedly enormous and particularly so at Christmas. That is why the dedicated food waste bins in our homes are so useful. Separating this waste from the rest shows exactly how much you are wasting and you can then reassess what how when and where you buy food and deal with it - but are we learning enough? Knowing what long-life products to keep in a store-cupboard for emergencies and to create different meals is a start. We have got very used to ready-meals here - more so than in other countries and have perhaps become less able to create a meal with what we have with ease and without stress. They have a place but sadly turn what would have been our inventive kitchens into fast food restaurants where you just request a particular ready-made meal. This isn't a good influence on children and can lead to big problems including huge leftovers when it is not available. Liking something one week does not mean they will like it the next either! With schools hopefully going back to having cookery classes let's hope more children will be doing their own inventing and understanding the mastering of creating delicious food for themselves. https://www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/ is a very good website to visit. You can also freeze just about anything - probably more than you think - so learn more - it saves fridge space and extends expiry dates! |
