David, when you yourself or someone you know finally get to own a car, you may bbe surprised to find find that its a legal requirement for the owner to insure the vehicle before putting it on the road. Thus limiting any possible loss in the event of its being stolen. He went on to say " He/she probably even thinks that because they are good citizens who pay their taxes etc" That "etc" of course including car insurance. So why should people have to insure their cars against being stolen* if 24 hour cover can be provided by the police to prevent any possibility of such thing happening ? Why should they have to pay twice ? Hint: with the police theoretically you get additional benefits; with car insurance that's it. That's all it does. *Third party only insurance, excluding theft is actually more expensive, owing to a statistical quirk. He then suggested " I expect your house and contents are fully insured so I'm sure you wouldn't want the police to be called out if neighbours saw it being burgled. 4 points 1 Unlike car insurance household contents insurance isn't a legal requirement. 2 Identical replacements cars were and are being churned out in their thousands from factories every day, in the event of theft - unlike irreplaceable family heirlooms 3. Car thieves don't cause potential distress by ransacking people's homes, their drawers and cupboards 4. It will presumably come as some consolation to you to know, that the reason why the police may not be able to immediately come to your assistance in the event of assault or a burglary at 5.a.m, is because they're all fully tied up preventing a white Range Rover from being stolen a few miles away. He then went on to ask - " Only fair innit?" That's your choice. I'd prefer them to be on hand to tackle more serious crime should the need arise at 5.a.m. "Prioritising limited resources". Which like "compulsory car insurance", seems to be an alien concept to many people. michael adams |
