| Jayne, driverless cars will cause huge congestion initially. At the moment, if I want to go into London for a day, it will cost me £20 plus to park for a day. I don't do it. With driverless cars you will be able to get a car in, but not pay the parking. Any congestion charge will get split between several users over the course of the day as well. Unless road pricing is brought in pre-emptively, which won't happen because it will be politically unacceptable, then driverless cars will cause gridlock. That will lead to road pricing as it will then be politically acceptable, but it will add several pounds to the price of a car journey into London. At that point, given the extra cost, most people will use public transport or cycle. Given the funding problems that TFL has, and the cuts in investment as a result, which are may well have an impact on services at some point, then cycling will be looking more and more appealing. There are a lot of journeys that just don't make sense by public transport anyway. My current journey to work takes twice as long by public transport as it does by bike on a good day for public transport. Given traffic, it's also probably slightly slower by car than bike, and it's a lot more expensive. Driverless cars are unlikely to change that. |
