| We don't all want to use a car either. The big difference is that using a car has far more negative impact on everyone else than other modes of transport - pollution, death and injuries and the huge amount of space required on the roads and for parking. You have a touching faith that technology will solve this - it won't. Electric cars address pollution from the tailpipe but take up exactly the same amount of space as cars with internal combustion engines. Just wait until pavement space gets reallocated for electric vehicle charging points. Funnily enough, Chiswick councillors didn't complain at all about this but then pavement space was being used for cars. Driverless cars (if they ever work in urban environments, which I doubt...) also take up the same space so are no solution to congestion. In fact, they may make congestion worse. At the moment, about 8 out of 10 cars in London only have one person in them. Imagine what the roads will be like with loads of vehicles with no people in them... |
