Actually no, Sainsbury's were not here 33 years ago, they replaced a small Waitrose and built over tennis courts. They also aggressively targetted local shops by undercutting. Pubs were busier maybe, but ceased serving at 11.00 and there are now far more establishments selling alcohol and opening until the small hours as they have replaced shops and utility companies which were closed by 17.30 and did not generate noise anyway. Very few people make any effort to be quiet late at night in residential areas and there is now a habit of eating, drinking and of course smoking outdoors that adds to nightly row. I am aware that Chiswick had the Palais cinema (closed 1916), the Electric (closed 1932), the Royal (closed 1933) and of course the Empire Theatre (closed 1959). All a bit before my time. I did'nt say anything about "permanent" conditions but it was still undoubtedly a comparatively quiet suburb in 1980 and isn't now. By the way, I actually lived on the High Road at Stamford Brook then and slept far better than I do now living off it. |
