Charlotte - Chiswick used to have both a cinema and a theatre. You moved in at a time when both had been lost, but to assume that that was a permanent condition was a tad naive. The pubs have always been there, and even in 1980 the normal closing time was 11:00 pm. Late-night opening was introduced across the country and is by no means unique to Chiswick. There may have been more "independent shops along the High Road, Devonshire Road and Turnham Green Terrace serving local needs" in 1980, but there were also Sainsburys, Woolworths and Marks and Spencer, among the many other chains lining the High Road. |
