Precisely. Virgin chose to fly to San Francisco, Vancouver and Manchester because of the high demand by both business and leisure travellers for flights to these profitable destinations. I wonder how many of the "business people" who say we need to expand Heathrow in order to provide more flights to important new markets such as Angola, Brazil, Russia, Kazakhstan,India, Nigeria, Indonesia or China etc frequently fly to those countries. I am sure quite a few of them have never been to more than one or two of those countries. There are a lot of business people based outside London and the South-East who would welcome more flights to important new markets such as Angola, Brazil, Russia, Kazakhstan,India, Nigeria, Indonesia or China etc from airports nearer to them such as Manchester, Birmingham or Glasgow. BAA, BA, Virgin etc want more capacity at Heathrow so they can operate more flights from Heathrow and make more money for themselves. It has nothing to do with boosting the UK economy as a whole. |
