There are quite a few guys who have submitted evidence to the Parliamentary Transport Select C'tee investigation on Aviation Strategy (? a rehearsal for the Davies Airport Commission) that shoot down the argument that more capacity automatically equates with better connectivity. A number of them say that without a proper slot system, airlines will just operate more of the same flights to the same destinations. Governments should get more involved in the slot allocation process and increase the incentives to operate large full planes. And Hounslow pointed out what happened when Virgin got some more slots : "2.5 Evidence suggests that airlines operating in a completely free market will tend to use new capacity to operate yet more flights on existing profitable routes rather than open up new ones. Taking Virgin Atlantic as an example, despite the industry mantra that it is necessary to have more flights to China when newly obtained slots are assigned, Virgin choose to fly to San Francisco, Vancouver and Manchester" |
